Gastronomic Tour Guimarães
Guimarães, initially known as Vimaranes, is a historical city, which played the leading role in the foundation of Portugal. It is considered the birthplace of Portugal because Afonso Henriques, who went on to be the our first king, was born here. With its historical centre being considered World Cultural Heritage.
The art of cooking and eating real food, beautifully prepared, is a trademark of Guimarães. In addition to the monuments and its history, food lovers can and should really taste Guimarães’s cuisine, highly influenced by its monastic roots.
The good regional cuisine and main dishes reveal themselves in the traditional recipes like arroz de cabidela (cabidela rice), a Portuguese dish made with poultry cooked in its own blood added to water, cod with corn bread and rojões (seasoned pieces of pork loin), all accompanied with the famous vinho verde from the region.
Regarding desserts, here you can taste the treasures of the national cuisine, such as "toucinho-do-céu" (heaven's bacon) and the traditional pies from Guimarães.
Breathing history, the town cuisine, enchants and delights anyone who tastes it.
